Llama walks in the North Devon Countryside
Watertown Llamas are pleased to be able to offer on farm llama walks, by appointment, including an introduction to keeping llamas, with lots of hands-on experience and a guided tour led by Evie and her friends! The trekking season generally runs from April to early September as this is an outdoor experience, primarily on our own fields which can be wet and muddy in winter, but special exceptions can sometimes be made out of season for truly dedicated llama lovers! Being in the heart of scenic North Devon we also have a few hills, but some lovely views along the way.
Meet and Greet
First of all you will be properly introduced to the woollies. They love to be brushed, which is a great way to bond with the llamas you will be walking. They will be looking forward to meeting you and will give a guided tour of the 22 acre farm, with the chance to meet all our llamas. In the summer months you may even get to see the young cria (baby llamas) at play!
Visitors will get to practise leading and guiding their llamas around a fun and exciting obstacle course. This involves steps, hurdles, jumps and hoops! Once you feel confident, we then venture out across the fields with your chosen llamas.
The llama walk is usually around 1 mile over our fields and being in Devon we do have a couple of hills, but the pace is very gentle. It takes in some great views of rural North Devon, with lots of photo opportunities. During the walk we reach our small lake, with a chance to see the ducks and black swans. The heron is a frequent visitor here, along with the resident moorhens, and when we are really lucky the little egret and the kingfisher can also be seen enjoying life at Watertown.
The llama experience takes around 2 hours. We can accomodate up to 6 people leading their own llama, but regrettably it is not really suitable for children under the age of 5, unless a parent is prepared to carry the child . It is entirely outdoors and not pushchair or toddler-friendly terrain! Children under 10 will get to lead a llama with an adult. Unfortunately we have no wheelchair access, but many folk with special needs are also able to enjoy walking with our llamas around the farm when accompanied by a responsible adult. Llama trekking is definitely not a spectator sport so all our visitors are expected to participate!
The Walk and Talk can be tailored to suit individual groups, so if for example, you are contemplating ownership of llamas or alpacas we can spend a bit more time teaching handling methods, haltering and husbandry etc.
We are happy to adapt the day to suit your needs. Just give us a call and let us know! We do ask that you arrive on time please as the llamas will be waiting for you, and please bring suitable footwear and outdoor clothing. We are primarily a working farm so sadly there are no "tourist" facilities here, just lots of fabulous llamas!
